National awards, concerning the profession and citizenship

• On the 13th of November 2019, he was distinguished by the Porto Consular Corps Association with the title of Honorary Associate

• On the 12th of December 2018,  he was made Honorary Member of the Alumni Association of the Faculty of Economy of the University of Porto and  received the Association's Gold Medal

• On the 24^th of November 2018, by occasion of the National Day of the Institution, he received the Gold Medal of the Institution of Engineers, Portugal, in recognition of his contribution to the development of the engineering field and to the mission of the Institution

• On the 30^th of July, 2018, he was awarded by His Excellency the President of Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Grand Cross of the Order of Public Instruction

• On the 28^th of June 2018, he received the Gold Medal for Professional Merit of the City of Vila Nova de Gaia.

• On the 3rd of April, 2018, he received the symbolic distinction of Honorary Ambassador of the Classical Orchestra of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, for his support to the cultural activities of the Orchestra

• On the 17^th of June 2017, he was awarded the recognition of the Institution of Engineers, North Region for his contribution to the development of the engineering domain, by occasion of the Day of the North Region.

• Since the 6th of November 2016, he is Honorary Member of  the Fraternity ‘Tripas à Moda do Porto’, an association that aims at promoting the oldest gastronomic tradition of the City of Porto.

• On the 18^th of July 2016, he received the Gold Medal and the status of Honorary Citizen of the City of Paredes, due to his links and cooperation with the City.

• On the 14^th of January 2016, he was distinguished with the ‘Professional of the Year Award’, by the Rotary Club Porto West.

• Since the 21st of November 2015, he is Member of the Queirosian Fraternity an association that aims at promoting the name and literary work of José Maria Eça de Queiroz (b. 1845 - d. 1900)

International distinctions concerning international cooperation

• On the 9th of February, 2018, he was awarded the Degree of Doctor Honoris Causa  by the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Georgia, on the occasion of its 100th Anniversary, for his contribution to international cooperation.

• On the 3^rd of November 2017, he was distinguished with the Medal "Friend of the Brazilian Navy", established in 1966 to “grace civilian personalities, without permanent contracts with the Navy, that have distinguished themselves in the work of disseminating maritime mentality, in relationship with the Navy”.

International award concerning academic and professional contributions

• He received the Dieter Behrens Award, 2013, highest distinction of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering, awarded every four years to an European personality in recognition of  ‘a significant contribution on behalf of the Federation in raising the profile of chemical engineering in Europe or in relation to the organization, management or development of EFCE's activity base’

International prizes in R&D and concerning R&D&I with the industry

• In 1998, with his Ph.D student Nuno Faria, received the Procter and Gamble best poster prize for innovation and presentation, out of 356 work presented to the World Congress on Particle Technology(paper 33, p. 33.1-33.8, Brighton, UK, 6-9 July, 1998)

• In 1994, with L. Bento, J. Chorão and M. J. Gonçalves he received the George and Eleanore Meade Award,  from the SIT-Sugar Industry Technologists Inc., world organization of industrial companies and research institutions concerning sugar production, for the best written and oral contribution to the Annual Technical Meeting – work developed in cooperation with  RAR-Refinarias de Açúcar Reunidas (in Proc of the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Sugar Industry Technologists Inc., p.p. 217-251, Toronto, Canada, June 13-16, 1993)
