About me

I am professor of Telecommunications and Electronics at University of Porto, with over 20 years experience.

Besides teaching I do research and manage projects in RF & Microwaves, Antennas and Optical Communications.

Senior researcher and founder of the Optical & Electronic Technologies (OET) area at INESC TEC, after successfully having attracted large funding within the framework of the reequipment programme of the Foundation for Science and Technology.

As one of the most experienced principal investigators in the field, I have dedicated a significant part of my career to research projects at both the national and European level. With a proven track record of success, I have contributed my expertise to 9 national funding projects – both as a principal investigator and researcher – while participating in 20 more projects, a remarkable 9 of which have received European funding. In several of these projects, I served as a local coordinator, working closely with research partners to ensure successful completion.

My contributions to the field extend beyond my involvement in funded projects, as I have published over 200 articles in highly regarded peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Moreover, I have authored five book chapters and secured five patents, highlighting my extensive experience and in-depth knowledge. My contributions to the scientific community also extend to my role as an active reviewer for several esteemed journals, including those associated with IEEE and IET. Additionally, I am proud to serve as a valued member of the Board of Editors at MDPI, a prestigious scholarly publisher.

Research interests

As an enthusiastic researcher, I am keenly interested in several cutting-edge fields, including radio-over-fibre technology and microwave photonics. My passion for the subject matter extends to my investigations into digital equalization in coherent optical systems, all-optical networks, and the modelling of nonlinearities. At the same time, I am passionate about designing innovative, compact multi-band antennas capable of performing well across a range of frequencies. Through my research, I seek to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of these dynamic fields, and I believe that my dedication and expertise can help to drive important developments in these areas. Ultimately, I am committed to pursuing new knowledge and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in these critical domains of scientific inquiry.

Astrophotography has become the perfect pastime for me, allowing me to delve into the captivating world of celestial bodies. While I also enjoy losing myself in a novel or getting lost in the beats of my favorite tunes, astrophotography brings unparalleled satisfaction and fulfillment to my life. It all started in 2020 when I decided to explore this mesmerizing hobby, and since then, I haven’t looked back. I am constantly pushing myself to learn more, improve my techniques, and capture the most breathtaking views possible. Devoting most of my free time to hone my skills, I have truly embraced the challenge this topic presents. The more I delve into the world of astrophotography, the more I find it to be a fantastic way to connect with the cosmos and deepen my understanding of the universe.
