Jorge Vasconcelos

Bio - Jorge Vasconcelos is currently the Chairman of NEWES, New Energy Solutions and consultant to several international organizations and  national authorities. He is Invited Professor at the Technical University of Lisbon and author and editor of several books and articles. He graduated in power systems from Porto University and got the Dr.-Ing. degree from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.
Jorge Vasconcelos was the first chairman of the Portuguese Energy Regulatory Authority, ERSE. He was founder and first chairman of the Council of European Energy Regulators and he was founder and member of the Executive Committee of the Florence School of Regulation. Prior to the regulatory experience, he worked in industry and at several European universities.



Tomás Gómez San Román

Bio - Tomás Gómez San Román is Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Engineering School of Comillas University, Madrid, Spain. He has been the Director of the Institute for Research in Technology (IIT), Vice-Rector of Research, Development, and Innovation of Comillas and Commissioner at the Spanish Energy Regulatory Authority (CNE). Prof. Gómez has a large experience in industry joint research projects in collaboration with Spanish, Latin American, and European institutions. His areas of interest are economic and regulatory issues in the power sector, operation and planning of transmission and distribution networks, power quality, distributed generation, and electric vehicles. He belongs to the Faculty Committee of the “Utility of the Future” study a partnership collaboration between MIT and IIT - Comillas.



Goran Strbac

Bio - Goran Strbac is a Professor of Energy Systems at Imperial College. His research, conducted in close collaboration with energy industry, governments and regulators, focuses on the development of technical, economic and market frameworks to facilitate cost effective integration of new forms of low carbon generation and demand side technologies. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the EU Technology Platform on Smart Grids and Director of the UK Centre for Grid Scale Energy Storage.






Ricardo Nunes

Bio - Ricardo Nunes is Marketing and Business Development Director at OMIP – The Iberian Energy Derivatives Exchange and at OMIClear - The Iberian Energy Clearing House, since 2010. He is Secretary of APE – Portuguese Association of Energy, since 2013. Ricardo Nunes got his Bachelor Degree in Economics from the Economics Faculty at the University of Coimbra and Master’s in Business Management by ISCTE Business School, Lisbon, Portugal. He also worked at the Portuguese TSO – REN, between 2008 and 2010.




Rafael Gómez-Elvira González

Bio - Rafael González is Industrial Engineer and holds a Ph.D. by the Politécnica University of Madrid (UPM). He is lecturer and researcher in the Energy Engineering Department of the UPM and other Spanish universities and he worked as a consultant in the field of energy at international level.
With more than 15 years of experience on energy regulation, among other positions, he was Adviser on Gas and Electricity in CEER, Director for European Affairs at the Spanish National Energy Commission and Joint Coordinator of the Electricity and Gas Regional Initiatives in ACER. In February 2012, he joined OMIE as Director of the Chairman & CEO’s Office.



Albino Marques


Title - Operation of a Power System With a Large Share of Renewable Sources - The Point of View of REN, the Portuguese Transmission System Operator

Bio - António Albino Marques got his graduation in Electrotechnical Engineerging from the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto in 1978 and then he got his Master in IT Systems from the same University in 1987. In 2002 he joined the Advanced Program in Business Management by the AESE, Association for Advanced Enterprise Studies. From 1979 to 1984 he was with Equimetal a Portuguese manufacturer of small cogeneration units and then joined EDP Group in 1984. From 1998 to 2001 he was head of the Network Operations Department, working in the area of remote supervision and substation control and from 2001 he is with REN, the Portuguese Transmission System Operator that was created following the unbundling of the EDP Group. Between 2001 and 2011 he managed the Operation and Maintenance Division. From 2011 to 2014 he was head of the Project and Construction Division of REN and since 2014 he is the head of the System Operation Division of REN being responsible for the National Dispatch and Network Operation Control Rooms, for the SCADA/EMS control systems and also for the Market Operations related with the settlement of transmission tariffs and the balancing markets. Since 2014, he is also the representative of REN in the System Operation Committee (SOC) in the European Network of Transmission System Operators of Electricity (ENTSOE) in Brussels.


Irina Oleinikova

Bio - Dra. Irina Oleinikova was born in Riga, Latvia and received the Dr.Sc.Ing. degree from the Riga Technical University, in 2000. Currently, she is Director of Institute of Physical Energetics and Project Manager of the FP7 IRP ELECTRA project - European Liaison on Electricity Committed Towards long-term Research Activities for Smart Grids. She is also a member of the Steering Committee of EERA (European Energy Research Alliance) Joint Programme on Smart Grids. She also integrates the Scientific Board of the Institute of Physical Energetics. During her career she authored more than 150 papers, and 4 books.
