ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP) offers a Doctoral Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering (PDEEC), covering the major areas of Electrical and Computer Engineering. PDEEC has a duration of 4 years. The first year is organized in 8 advanced mandatory and elective courses distributed by two semesters. The other 3 years correspond to the development of the Ph.D. thesis research work.

FEUP and DEEC have ongoing cooperation programs with the following USA Universities: CMU – Carnegie-Mellon University, MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and UTA – the University of Texas at Austin. A double degree (PhD) in ECE is offered with the University of Carnegie-Mellon under the CMU|Portugal Program. (More information may be found at www.cmuportugal.org).

CAREER PROSPECTS

The student will develop a solid understanding of an important knowledge domain as well as the capacity to perform advanced work autonomously, and show evidence of critical thinking abilities enabling him/her to analyze, conceive and design new ways and methods for addressing new and complex engineering problems, making a significant contribution to the advancement of the state of the art.

Although an academic career is probably the most common reason for obtaining a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, a large number of opportunities are available today in the R&D departments of large and small companies, offering services and industrial products in different applications and sectors of a global economy.

FIELDS OF SPECIALIZATION

Current and emerging research topics in all the areas of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

RESEARCH CENTERS

The research environment made available to PDEEC students comprises the physical and human resources of DEEC and several research institutes associated with FEUP:
