Intersectoral Network for Innovation on Smart Thermal Solutions for Bicycle Helmets

Bicycle helmets are a tremendously important asset against head injuries during accidents. However, their normal use is often associated with strong thermal discomfort due to the (thermally) insulating nature of the materials used in their structures. This affects directly the willingness to wear helmets, which has direct implications in terms of the risk to which riders are exposed to.

There are evidences in the literature that helmet thermal performance can be improved, although fur-ther research is needed to fully understand the transfer phenomena occurring in helmets and to identify strategies to improve helmet passive and active performance.

The SmartHELMET project will build on the complementary expertise of research and industrial partners through knowledge sharing between sectors. A series of networking, training activities, workshops, and joint research initiatives will be explored to potentiate synergies and generate innovative solutions for helmet thermal management.
