DAI&R-Distributed Artificial Intelligence & Robotics is LIACC's group affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering at UP. Our team includes, for the next period 8 (plus 1 nonresident) PhDs and about 20 Researchers and is mostly devoted to research in the area of Distributed AI and Multi-agent Systems (MAS) seeking solutions for Distributed, Dynamic and Decentralized problems. There are classes of problems that inherently are of a distributed, dynamic and decentralized nature as those which occur when different and heterogeneous entities need to inter operate over a computer network. To deal with this kind of problems, our main objectives are: (1) To develop further our long term research on “Electronic Institution” for agent-based B2B operations, a computational framework providing services like negotiation mediation, ontology mapping, contract drafting, monitoring and enforcement, Trust and Reputation indexes evaluation for consortia and Virtual Organizations’ life-cycle automatic assistance. The core component is a normative environment wherein norms regulating contractual relationships are being formally specified to enable norms monitoring and enforcement. A prototype implementation together with a Computational Trust and Reputation Model for estimating agents’ trustworthiness taking into account dynamics of the contextual information is being developed. (2) Multi-Agent teams' coordination and simulation: To define high-level languages for the description of missions and operating scenarios, strategies for coordinating teams of autonomous (or semi-autonomous) agents that perform in rich, dynamic, both cooperative and adversarial environments. New coordination strategies, such as setplays, are being developed for teams of autonomous agents that perform complex tasks in rich, dynamic environments. We will also further develop our common framework for implementing a platform to control different agents/robots to be used in cooperative robotic tasks. To further validate our approach we plan to participate in RoboCup with three distinct teams using the same base code and coordination methodologies. To continue the development of the Intelligent Simulator of Coastal Ecosystems (EcoSimNet) using ecological models including physical and bio geochemical processes, integrating human decisions/factors in the simulation scenarios. To simulate, through MASDIMA – Multi-Agent System for Disruption Management, Airline Operations Center solutions taking into consideration several dimensions of the disruption problem (airline operations, flights/aircrafts, crew and passengers). The MASDIMA aims at a possible generalization of disruption management generalization. (3) Text Mining: In the previous two years, this new line of investigation took the scene in our group. We are willing to go fast from research to proof of concepts on Information Extraction from Industrial Media (news filtering, quotation extraction, biography generation). We are also exploring techniques for Opinion Mining from User Generated Contents (blogs, micro-blogs and user comments). Also Machine Learning based approaches to Language Processing and Text Classifications. Inductive Logic Programming will be used for searching and ranking relevant scientific papers related to a particular genomic or proteomic set of sequences. We aim at developing lexical-semantic resources for Portuguese language processing. (4) Multi-agent Systems and other applications: To further develop a platform for intelligent wheelchairs (IW) displaying cooperative behavior towards other IW as well as humans in hospital environments. To consolidate the MAS-T2er Lab Project (Laboratory for MAS-based Traffic and Transportation Engineering Research) is an integrated multi-agent system that applies a methodological approach that allows for the assessment of today’s intelligent transportation solutions through the metaphor of agents. To propose intelligent, adaptive and reconfigurable control solutions for automation problems and manufacturing systems using MAS and service-oriented principles. To prove the concept of the Real-time Dynamic Multimedia Storyline system, based on online audience biometric Information. To propose a dynamic scheduler for heterogeneous clusters in a multi-user environment that maximizes the resource usage by allowing a floating mapping of processors to a given job and second, that achieve at least satisfactory levels of QoS. To continue with the 3D reconstruction of human spine building models of the spine from planar radiography.

Main Achievements |

- An important issue we would like to first emphasize is that recent lines of research as it is the case of Text Mining, found in the group a good environment for new promising realizations, simultaneously in the scientific and industrial fields (agreement with Portugal Telecom). - During 2009, DAI&R group published 9 papers in International Journals and 1 Book, edited 2 conference proceedings and published 96 papers in peer reviewed proceedings and books from which 33 are ISI indexed. - During 2009, 1 PhD thesis and 31 MSc theses have been completed. Although the number of completed PhD during this period was low, for 2010, a total of 12 PhD theses are expected to be completed in the group. - A sign of our progressive influence on the non-academic environment is the number (and quality) of contacts with organizations and companies, including contacts with important companies like Schneider Electric GmbH, TAP airlines, Portugal Telecom, SISCOG and Microsoft. - Concerning the recognition by our scientific peers, we have been also involved in the organization of several Conferences and Workshops’ (9) at different levels and participated in more than 50 international scientific meeting Program Committees. - We believe that our group’s approach to the concept of "Electronic Institution" is becoming more accepted and closer to a possible instantiation for real domains. Once the Normative Environment formalization and the Computational Trust and Reputation (CTR) Model have been proposed to the research community, although further developments are still needed, we feel more comfortable to get closer to the application domain and a funded project is going to start on that direction. Getting into more details, a model of norm inheritance and defeasibility has been formalized and fully implemented, allowing for contracts to adjust the normative response in business-specific cases. Also, contract monitoring has been enhanced with a flexible model of deadlines, formalized using directed obligations with liveliness and deadlines. A model for adaptive deterrence in the normative framework has been designed, taking inspiration from economics and legal theory. Regarding our proposed CTR Model, SinAlpha is a trust aggregation that takes into account important properties of the dynamics of trust (taken from the psychological field), and Contextual Fitness, a component that explores a new trend in the trust field, that is the exploration of the situational context. Both modules were already implemented and tested in a simple scenario, and the main results were published in international events. - Public deployment of the Verbatim quotations extraction system, in partnership with Sapo.pt/Portugal Telecom (http://verbatim.labs.sapo.pt) November 2009. It successfully integrates three different classification techniques (Nearest Neighbor, Support Vector Machines and Rocchio). - A software common framework suitable for implementing an agent-based software to control different robots for several cooperative robotic tasks including in Robotic Soccer has been developed and tested (ACORD/FCPortugal project). A complete "setplay" framework was developed enabling easy definition and execution of flexible "setplays" in any RoboCup league with distinct robots. Also, a soccer ontology and software for automatically detecting a set of (robotic) soccer events has been developed enabling high-level analysis of soccer games. - A book as well as a book chapter (to appear in 2010), a Journal paper and five other papers were published about our MAS proposal for dealing with the Disruption management. - Online Emotion Classifier for a Biometric Multichannel HW inclusion detecting user emotions when immersed in a simulated 3D Immersible Environment lead to the BioStories' Vertical Prototype. - Flexible control for manufacturing systems work has been published in international scientific journals (3 articles) , and in international top-ranked conferences (8 papers), Moreover, we have one European Project approved (EU-FP7) and P. Leitão is now chairing IEEE IES Technical Committee on Industrial Agents. - A dynamic scheduling method to minimize the completion time of a batch of jobs on clusters has been proposed. - A method for fast 3D reconstructions of the spine that only requires the identification of two splines by the user was tested on radiography exams of patients. - New prototype of an intelligent wheelchair including a Planning module is now available. The associated Intellwheels project was accepted for funding by FCT enabling to further develop the project and to consolidate the collaborations with APPC – Portuguese Association for Cerebral Palsy and ESTSP – Superior School for Health Technology of Porto for testing the Intelligent Wheelchair prototypes.

Future Research | |
Objectives |
|
- Enhancement of the self-adaptation features of the normative environment, including norm evolution and the selection of other enforcement policies based on the evolving characterization of an agent population. A model for automatically negotiating contractual conditions taking into account the trust values derived from a Computational Trust and Reputation system. - Enhancement of the Computational Trust and Reputation (CTR) model in the Electronic Institution environment that derives the confidence level of candidate partners based on appropriate metrics and past behavior. To use argumentation-based interactions for electronic contract negotiation in order to obtain different contracts according to each specific partner characteristics (for example: trustworthiness). - Enhancement of the actual Computational Trust and Reputation (CTR) system in development. This includes the specification, implementation and testing of a new machine learning-based module of this system that allows the estimation of the trustworthiness of agents (business partners) that are new entrants in the system. - Service-oriented and multi-agent control solutions for advanced automation and production systems, exhibiting distribution, modularity, re-configurability and responsiveness features. Application of bio-inspiration theories in complex and evolvable systems, namely in distributed manufacturing systems. - Multi-criteria scheduling towards Cost Effective Computing: To obtain significant gains in energy consumption it is necessary to see the various platforms in an integrated manner. On the one hand, using a paradigm similar to the Cloud / Utility Computing, where the user requests resources without worrying about the physical platform, and secondly, by scheduling virtual machines previously configured according to user requirements - Using Image Analysis techniques, such as 3D/2D Registration, constrained by statistical metrics for fine-tuning the current 3D model reconstructions. - Development and application of Machine Learning techniques to state-of-the-art information extraction tasks, namely opinion mining and trend extraction in both industrial media and user-generated content. - Enhancing Verbatim with selection capabilities of the best features for the classifiers based on the type of news. Study on sentiment analysis: the automatic detection of irony on text, the inference of opinions on text based on the polarity of words and the study of trends based on sentiments expressed by people through social networks as the Twitter. - Inclusion of coalitions between similar agents to improve “what if” simulation scenarios in the EcoSimNet platform. Integration of all applications in a complete and fully-functional Environment Decision Support System (EDSS). - To conclude the definition of disturbance and mission languages. Integrate air traffic controller into the framework and to complete the framework, as to allow for mission definition, execution and evaluation. - To develop a tool to automatically construct team and players behavior models through final game statistics. Construct an offline and online analysis software capable of automatically detecting the best strategy for a robotic team in order to improve their game performance. - To create distinct robotic teams and participate in RoboCup 2010, using the same base code for controlling all the teams’ robots. These teams will also use the same coordination methodologies with emphasis for the use of setplays as the main coordination methodology. - To further improve out Intellwheels – Intelligent Wheelchair prototype by adding a fully functional multi-modal interface, new autonomous navigation and high-level planning capabilities as well as a patient mining module, capable of automatically detecting the wheelchair user’s characteristics. - To build a full prototype of a Disruption Management MAS for the Airline Operations Domain (AOC) and to abstract to other application domains. To create an IDE to visual define the MAS for AOC. - To build a Knowledge Transfer platform allowing to convert the knowledge gathered in MAS-T2er Lab Project research activities into courses to be offered in both to undergrad and to post-graduate levels; Release the open-source versions the MAS-T2er Lab Project’s software.
