DAI&R includes 10 PhDs, 17 other researchers and 11 collaborators. DAI&R pursues research accommodated under ACM CCS section: I.2.11 Distributed Artificial Intelligence. DAI&R, has the following research lines: 1)“Agent-based Interoperability”, 2)“Robotics and Team Coordination”, 3)“Text Mining”, 4)“Infrastructures and Applications”. 1) In the long-term research on Electronic Institution(EI) Platform for B2B contracting, we are investigating interrelationships between Trust issues and normative systems. EI is a computational normative environment, for multi-agent interactions, supporting trust-based business contracts among partners. We propose algorithms for the estimation of agent’s trustworthiness, using the dynamics of trust and specific contextual information. Two models SinAlpha and ContextualFitness, are seen as Trust and Reputation module for the EI. MAS approach is being used in MAS-T2er Lab Project (MAS-based Traffic and Transportation Engineering Research). An integrated MAS allows for the assessment of intelligent transportation solutions through the metaphor of agents. Inferring and applying traffic management strategies is our goal. MASDIMA – MAS for Disruption Management proposes a decentralized system to find the best composed solution after a disruption in the pre-existent plan has occurred. Airline Operations Control and a real airline company I.S. provide the scenario. Closely related, is the aim at developing intelligent, adaptive and reconfigurable control solutions for automation and manufacturing systems, based on MAS and service-oriented principles. Through MAS we propose realistic simulations of ecological models including physical and biogeochemical processes together with human factors to provide flexible aquatic ecosystems management. 2) To define languages to describe missions and scenarios, strategies for coordinating teams of autonomous (or semi-autonomous) agents that perform in rich, dynamic, both cooperative and adversarial environments. New coordination strategies, such as tactics, flexible formations or setplays, are being developed for teams of autonomous agents that perform complex tasks. We will also further develop our common framework for implementing a platform to control different agents/robots for cooperative robotic tasks. To further validate our approach we plan to participate in RoboCup (simulation 2d, simulation 3d, mixed reality, standard platform league) using the same base code and coordination methodologies. Agent-based Team coordination is useful in multiple scenarios although Robotics is a good application domain for testing ideas. In this context we are developing methodologies for improving robotic team performance and test coordination methodologies for agents’ joint missions in search and rescue domains. For that objective we are defining high-level languages for the appropriate description of scenarios, missions, teams and environment disturbances. 3) “Text mining” research line is growing fast inside the group. We are developing methods for extracting information (opinions, events, trends) from user-generated contents (blogs, twitter messages, on-line user comments) and from industrial media (on-line news). Research on inferring ontology-based resources (taxonomies, thesaurus) using information obtained from resources like Wikipedia is intended to be transferred to the non-academic. We are mostly devoted to Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning techniques applied to the Portuguese language. A Web based search tool based on Text Mining and Machine Learning techniques to find out relevant literature for genomic or proteomic sequences is also in progress. 4) We are driven by the need of a Dynamic Scheduler for heterogeneous clusters in a multi-user environment. We address the problem of scheduling multi-user jobs in a cluster. Jobs (or applications) include a set of dependent tasks and are represented by Direct Acyclic Graphs. The aim is to develop scheduling algorithms that maximize the use of resources by allowing a variable mapping of processors to a given job and achieve satisfactory QoS level. On the applications side, we are using a Graphical Processor Unit to achieve high computational efficiency. GPU is currently being used to deal with Digital Reconstructed Radiographs generation from Polygon meshes, for registering 3D deformable models of vertebrae on 2D radiographs. We proposed a method for 3D modeling of the human spine from two planar radiographs. A statistical articulated model of the spine is deformed until it best fits recognized splines. We aim at developing bioinformatics methods and strategies for the interpretation of biological data characterizing the metabolism and immune system.

Classification of news, based on Machine Learning algorithms, identification of Named Entities and the development of techniques to automatically annotated text corpora have been developed. Our work, in collaboration with others (INESC, DEI), lead to the establishment of UP-SAPO Labs in our Faculty in close association with LIACC which got a number of scholarships for students. Development of tools and strategies for automatic microblog messages processing. Analysis of the Portuguese Twitter environment (numbers, trends, evolution, styles) and the creation of a specific corpus. EcoSimNet platform (simulator) supporting independent agents that interchange results whenever necessary. A Parallel Simulated Annealing algorithm for aquaculture optimization has been integrated into EcoSimNet. A Cartesian coordinates based system for calculating soccer final game statistics using both players and ball coordinates. The prototype has been used for team strategy optimization and intelligent selection of setplays, for the FC Portugal team. New prototype of an intelligent wheelchair including a multi-modal interface. The associated Intellwheels project funded by FCT, started in July, enabling to further develop the project and to consolidate the collaborations with APPC – Portuguese Association for Cerebral Palsy and ESTSP – Superior School for Health Technology of Porto for testing the Intelligent Wheelchair prototypes. Biostories: an emotional driven multimedia content delivery system - Models: The new version of the computational Trust and Reputation (CTR) model, composed by SinAlpha and Contextual Fitness modules, was integrated in the Electronic Institution platform.
