- Distributed, Dynamic and
Decentralized problems There are classes of problems
that inherently are of a distributed, dynamic and decentralized nature as
those which occur when different and heterogeneous entities need to
interoperate over a computer network. To deal with this kind of problems, a)
Electronic Institutions (EI) and b) teams' coordination methodologies, both
assume a relevant role for c) MAS-based applications. a) EI provide services like
negotiation mediation, ontology mapping, contract drafting, monitoring and
enforcement, trust and reputation indices evaluation for consortia and
Virtual Organizations’ life-cycle automatic assistance. These problems are
better addressed through an Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (MAS)
paradigm. However improvements are required both on the theoretical and
practical aspects of MAS, in order to achieve better interoperability,
decision making, agents and teams’ coordination. Our approaches include the
use of more sophisticated negotiation protocols and agents’ adaptation
capabilities, defining Normative environments for contract drafting and
operations monitoring and computing Trust and Reputation information for
agent-based simulation platforms. Also contributions on formalizing advanced
cognitive and Emotion-like architectures have been done. b) Coordination strategies are
being developed for teams of autonomous agents that perform complex tasks in
rich, dynamic, both cooperative and adversarial environments. We are
exploring new coordination protocols such as setplays and formations
definition processes, as well as methodologies for analyzing team behaviors
in different application domains. We also defined a common framework for the
implementation of a platform to control different agents/robots to be used in
cooperative robotic tasks. We are also aiming at developing
new realistic agent based, intelligent, simulators. For this purpose we are
developing new intelligent simulation methodologies that enable automatic
calibration of simulation models, and methodologies that enable the
introduction of humans in the simulation loop as intelligent agents. c) Selected application
domains for MAS are B2B model interaction problems, agents’ team coordination
strategies for mobile agents (robosoccer competitions, aerial mini-vehicles
for pollution tracking), Intelligent Text Mining and question-answering
systems, Air Lines operations’ disruption management, city traffic control,
adaptive and reconfigurable control solutions for automation and
manufacturing systems, E-learning systems and ontology development for Nursing
Practices. Through the MAS-T2er Lab
Project (Laboratory for MAS-based Traffic and Transportation Engineering
Research) we intend to implement an integrated multi-agent system that
applies a methodological approach that allows for the assessment of today’s intelligent
transportation solutions through the metaphor of agents. The application
domain in the MAS-T2er Lab framework is then conceptualised in terms of
agents and three basic subsystems are identified, namely the real world, the
virtual domain, and the control strategies inductor. The latter includes
expert agents that observe synthetic population, can directly intervene and
experiment on it, and apply coordination policies to tune the behaviour of
some elements in order to improve overall performance. Then operational
parameters of the real world are adjusted to reflect the control policies
tested in the virtual domain. Hierarchical Reinforcement
Learning and non-supervised learning in alarm detection is also an issue we
are addressing. Complementary we also address other Distributed Systems
related issues, like scheduling multi-user jobs in clusters and, for
manufacturing systems, economic performance assessment. We intend to go from
here to the so called “cloud computing” as a kind of service-based computing.
We also deal with the multi-media area, using users’ emotions assessment
through biometric sensors readings for dynamically change multi-media
contents delivery. |

What we believe is of most
importance to stress out is that DAI&R Group has evolved through the
inclusion of 4 more PhDs enhancing the scope of our applications domains
(medical, manufacturing) and impact on the society (patents, contracts). Also, besides becoming more
solid in important areas like our Electronic Institution multi-agent system
based platform for B2B interoperability, we have progressed in other areas
where we had, in the past, very incipient results. This is mainly the case of
our work on intelligent Text Mining through which we had reached closed
contacts with one of the most important Portuguese PT-related companies
(Sapo.pt). During 2008, DAI&R group
published 12 articles in international Journals plus 67 papers in peer
reviewed proceedings and books. Many have been indexed in the ISI scientific
publications Data Base, or have been published in the proceedings of well
ranked conferences (indexed at CORE and CS-ranking.org).We had 10
publications in Springer Lecture Notes Series and 8 in IEEE International
Conferences. 42 Master thesis have been completed
(one got the award for the best thesis in a specific domain at FE University
of Porto). Most of the thesis have been done in cooperation with companies,
also improving the group visibility in the non-academic world. Although in
the previous three-year period, our group had 4 PhD theses concluded, we have
none for 2008. However we expect at least 4 more in the next two years. Recent comers to the group
significantly enhanced our productivity both concerning patents (1 patent and
3 pre-registered patents) and prototypes (17) making more evident the group
flavor on applied science and technology. Another sign of our
progressive influence on the non-academic environment is the number (and
quality) of contacts with organizations and companies: 13 actions, including
with important companies like Schneider Electric GmbH, TAP airlines and Sapo
(telecommunications) or Institutes like the “Instituto de Neurociências”. Concerning the recognition
by our scientific peers, we have been also involved in Conferences’
organization (7) at different levels, as it is the case of the European
Conference on Artificial Intelligence (Area Chair) and participated in 64
scientific meeting Program Committees. We consider a good sign of
international recognition, the fact that our members participate in the
Editorial Board or P. C. Board of 16 International Journals. During 2008 the members of
the group have been very active in preparing and submitting research project
proposals (10 proposals). |

Future Research |
|
Objectives |
|
- Electronic Institution: DAI&R Group would like,
in the next couple of years, to conclude our past 8 years effort on the
conceptualization and implementation of our Electronic Institution, a
software multi-agent based platform encompassing a set of services (adaptive
negotiation, ontology-based understanding, contract drafting, normative
environment- based monitoring, trust and reputation building and exploration
for advising on partner selection) for facilitating entities (Organizations,
Enterprises) interoperability in a B2B like scenario. Moreover, we will make
efforts for approaching end-users and get from them enough feedback to focus
on the real important needed improvements. In order to get there, we will
enhance the number and quality of simulation tests on using Trust, negotiation
and norms in an integrated way. - Agent-based simulation: Regarding agent-based
simulation R&D, we need to develop a more robust automatic model
calibration agent, using meta-heuristics capable of optimizing the
calibration of generic simulations. EcoSimNet will
be validate by performing experiments with Sungo Bay and Ria Formosa
models for optimization of Bivalve production and environmental impact
studies. We are willing to develop a ready to use, commercial version of the
multi-agent simulation system for ecological simulations – EcoSimNet. We want to intensify our
research efforts within the MAS-T2er Lab Project, bringing to the group more
both post-grad, PhDs and Master, and undergrad students. As a side effect, we
want to increase the number of publications by the group, aiming ISI index
conferences and one more Journal submission in 2009. We aim at release the
first open-source versions of the VD Core Microscopic Simulator and the NetEditor traffic network editor. We will also
intensifying collaboration with international partners, UFRGS, UFSC and UFC,
in Brazil, Leeds Univ. in the UK, U. Rey Juan Carlos, in Spain, and start
other contacts in the US, Europe and China. It will be interesting to
build a Knowledge Transfer platform that will allow us to convert the
knowledge gathered in our MAS-T2er Lab research activities into courses to be
offered in both undergrad and post-graduate levels. Finally, and not so easy
to achieve, we will try to intensify collaboration with the industry, namely
with Trenmo S.A., NDrive
S.A., STCP, and start new contacts, namely with Brisa
S.A. and other intelligent transportation systems stakeholders. - Agent-based teams
coordination: On the agent-based teams
coordination topic, we want to finish the implementation of the software
common framework for creating agent-based software that controls different
robots to be used for several cooperative robotic tasks; Also to develop new
robust coordination and communication methodologies that enable teams of
heterogeneous robots, built and programmed by different entities, to
accomplish complex collective tasks. We will continue to further apply the
developed software common framework and coordination methodologies in several
Robotic Soccer leagues (simulation 2D, simulation 3D, small-size and
middle-size). Finally we hope to develop new methodologies enabling the
creation of Human-Robot heterogeneous teams. - Intelligent Wheelchairs: An important project
(INTELWHEELS – Intelligent Wheelchair development) will continue enabling us
to develop a generic IW framework for easy development of new intelligent
wheelchairs and IW control algorithms. The framework should be flexible
enough to enable easy transformation of commercial wheelchairs into
intelligent wheelchairs with minor hardware changes and to enable the
introduction of new modules and algorithms in the intelligent wheelchair. It
will include a complete IW simulation module enabling to conduct virtual
reality and mixed reality experiments. Our aim is also to develop a
flexible multimodal interface enabling the wheelchair to be commanded at a
very high-level using a high-level command language based on simple commands
such as “go to bedroom”, “wander”, “follow wall”. The commands will be
triggered by user selected input sequences using the multimodal interface.
The wheelchair will enable the user to even use the same type of input
sequences to select its preferred inputs/action association. In order to
enable the user to start using the wheelchair. It is also intended to develop
a patient classification module based on machine learning techniques capable
of identifying the user basic capabilities and enable him to start using the
wheelchair flexible multimodal interface in a straightforward manner. - Text Mining: Once we have been successful
in attracting the attention of an important Portuguese PT related company
(SAPO.PT) we will strength efforts in the direction of better algorithms for
Information extraction from news (event and trend detection) and Web 2.0
media (e.g. Wikipedia). Another exciting and innovative research direction is
starting on “Opinion mining” from user-generated content (blogs and microblogs). We will continue to work on Text
classification and pursuing further developments of tools and resources
(lexicons / ontolgies) for the semantic analysis of
text content in Portuguese. - Intelligent Sports
Analysis: To design and implement a
complete game analysis system, including visualization of soccer games and
associated feedback regarding player’s and team’s performance; to build
soccer (and also other sport’s) player models and tactical situations to
relate team organization and players performance; to design, implement and
install in real soccer fields, a vision system capable of real-time tracking
of players, without human intervention, during a game; to formalize player
and team performance measures and the algorithms enabling its calculus; to
create a simulation system capable of simulating soccer matches using
player’s and team’s models created with the aid of the game analysis system
and expert knowledge. -Flexible Manufacturing
Systems The future research work
will here be focused mainly in the following topics: a) Service-oriented and
multi-agent based control solutions for advanced automation and production systems,
exhibiting distribution, modularity, re-configurability and responsiveness
features and b) Application of
bio-inspiration theories in complex and dynamic systems, namely in
distributed manufacturing systems. - Other topics: Once we are developing a
system for selecting personalized multi-media contents delivery, we will make
efforts to achieve Emotion Classification Engine fine tuning, perform
appropriate validation Tests and finish a related PhD Thesis. Learning and decision-making
methods in the scope of social networks, information visualization and
e-learning systems. |
