Luís Paulo
Reis holds a BSc (5 years), MSc (2
years) and PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the
Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), Associate Professor of
DEI/FEUP - Department of Computer Engineering (DEI) of FEUP and Director of LIACC/UP - Laboratory of
Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science of the same University. It has a
complete and very well balanced curriculum in the main areas of Computer
Engineering and Computer Science with emphasis on the areas of Artificial
Intelligence, Intelligent Robotics, Machine Learning, Interaction /Games,
Computer Programming and Information Systems. He has very good academic
qualification, teaching experience, research experience, knowledge transfer
experience and management experience in these areas.
Graduated, Master and PhD in Electrotechnical and
Computer Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of
Porto (FEUP). He was the best graduate student at FEUP of all
his courses in 1993. He received, among others, the Engineer António Almeida Award (Eng. António
Almeida Foundation), the National
Engineering Award (Portuguese Order of Engineers) and the Centenary Award from FEUP (Faculty of
Engineering of the University of Porto) for his academic merit at FEUP.
He obtained excellent
classifications in all disciplines of the bachelor's and master's degree
with emphasis on a very high number of classifications equal to or higher than
19 values (more than 20 disciplines) and minimum score of 18 values in disciplines
of areas directly related to Computer Science. He carried out his end-of-course
project and master's thesis in the areaof
Machine Learning /Pattern Recognition
and Image Processing and Analysis usingin both projectsseveral methodologies
in the area of Intelligent Systems, with high impact, including 8 publications
and double "best paper" at the
RECPAD 1993 conference. He carried out his doctoral thesis in Intelligent Systems (Multi-Agent Systems / Intelligent Robotics) with and taken impact,
victory in RoboCup 2000, Euro RoboCup 2000 and 2001, giving rise to 5 projects funded by FCT in FEUP in which he was the
main responsible for the preparation of proposals and as well as a high
number of awards and subsequent doctoral and master's theses held at FEUP and
UAveiro.
He is
currently Associate Professor of the
Department of Computer Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the
University of Porto. Previously he was Associate Professor of the School of
Engineering of the University of Minho (2011-2018), Assistant (2001-2003) and
Assistant Professor (2003-2011) of the Faculty of Engineeringof the University
ofPorto, Assistant Master of the Fernando Pessoa University (1994-2001) and
Monitor of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (1991-1993).
At the level of coordination and leadership of scientific research teams
stands out to be currently Director of
LIACC - Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science of the
University of Porto (one of the oldest research units of FCT: UI0027/FCT) and
belong for 10 years (since 2007) to the
direction of LIACC. Within the framework of LIACC also coordinated the HMIC – Human-Machine Intelligent
Cooperation Group, which maintained close collaboration with the ALGORITMI center at the University of
Minho, IEETA at the University of
Aveiro and INESC-TEC. In addition to
having coordinatedthe essential phase of
theStrategic Project of LIACC -
FCT/UI0027 (2013/14-2018/19, since 2016), he currently coordinates the
Strategic Project of liacc 2020-2023 and
participated, as a member, of the several previous LIACC strategic projects
(since 1996) and as a member/collaborator, of the strategic projects of the
IEETA, INESC-TEC and ALGORTIMI center from 2011/2012 to 2018.
He is the author of more than500 publications in international jorunals,
books and conferences. It is noteworthy that more than 400
publications are indexed in the ISI Web of Knowledge and/or Scopus databases.
For more correct analysis of these publications, it is suggested the analysis

He has
published several books and edited 15
issues of international indexed journals
(ISI/SCOPUS) and Atas/proceedings of
a large number of international conferences with emphasis on the 20-volume edition, in the last eight
years, of the reputed springer
publishing house and more than 20 volumes that appear in the IEEE Xplore library.
He has
published more than 60 articles in international journals with emphasis on the publication of more than 50 articles inindexed journals (SCI-ISI or
SCImago-SCOPUS). It also has more than 30 conference publications that are/were
CORE A/A* and more than 120 in
conferences that are/were (CORE A, B or C) with emphasis on conferences such as
IROS, ECAI, IJCAI, IEEE RAM, NIPS, GRAPP, GECCO, EPIA, RoboCup Symposium, IJCNN, IEEE CEC, WI-IAT, IWANN, IEEE SMC,
IEEE FIE, PATAT, ECP among others.
At the
citation level, he has about 5500 citations in Google Scholar with an
h-index of 30 and an i-10 index greater than 150 (https://scholar.google.pt/citations?user=bCKD3moAAAAJ&hl=en). In Scopus he has more than 2000 citations and an h-index of 21.
It is noteworthy that 365 of its 400 publications (90%) appear in SCOPUS listed in the area of "Computer Science" and 380 (95%) in ComputerScience/Engineering/Mathematics. It is also noteworthy to be the
researcher, in its two main areas of activity, with more publications in the
main conferences of the national communities of Artificial Intelligence and
Robotics (APPIA - Artificial Intelligence and SPR - Intelligent Robotics): EPIA with a total of 37 published
articles (24 in the books Springer LNCS and 13 in the local books) and IEEE ICARSC (formerly EC Robotics) with
a total of 39 publications.
He was
involved in a large number of scientific research projects funded, especially
having been principal investigator in
four projects financed through competitive financing by FCT,having in all
beenresponsible for the original idea, preparation of the proposal,
coordination and scientific management of the project and preparation of the
interim and final reports: FCPortugal
(FCT
- POSI/ROBO/43910/2002), ABSES (FCT/POSC/EIA/57671/2004), ACORD (FCT/PTDC/EIA/70695/2006)
and INTELWHEELS
(FCT-RIPD/ADA/109636/2009).
More recently, the QVida+ Project (NORTE-01-0247-FEDER-003446) with a total
investment of EUR 930k and was the main responsible for the idea and writing of
the project and the EUROC – European Robotic Challenges: TIMAIRIS (FP7 grant agreement:608849) in which he actively
participated in the writing of the proposal and implementation of the project
which had a funding of approximately EUR 600k for the TIMAIRIS team. He
was the principal Researcher of the IASAE
Project – Artificial Intelligence in Food and Economic Safety
(LIACC/FEUP, ASAE/Ministry of Economy) directly funded by the government
through the FCT with an amount of 125k Eur.
He also gave particular relevance to the careful writing of projects for PhD and post-doctorate of students
and was responsible as advisor/co-advisor for the joint design of more than 40
proposals/projects to obtain competitive funding for organizations such as FCT,
Gulbenkian Foundation and CNPQ (mostly approximately 60k Eur each, totaling
more than 1.5 Million Euros of
competitive funding).
He Supervised 22 doctoral theses, 140 master's dissertations and 68
undergraduate/end-of-course projects already completed. He is currently
supervising 12 doctoral theses.
He was on the Programme
Committee of more than 300 international
conferences/workshops, with emphasis on EPIA, IEEE ICARSC, RoboCup Int.
Symposium, AAMAS, ECAI, IJCAI, IBERAMIA, CISTI, WorldCIST and ICAART. He also
belonged to the editorial board or the scientific committee of several national
and international journals and has
carried out scientific researchfor more than30 indexed journals. He
organized more than 60 international scientific events with emphasis on
EPIA (chair in 2013, 2019 and 2021 and more than 10 organized thematic tracks),
IEEE ICARSC (chair in 2013, 2019 and 2020), ROBOT (chair in 2013, 2015 and
2019), CISTI series ( co-chair 2009-2017), WorldCIST series (co-chair
2015-2020) and CIAIQ/ISQR/WCQR series (co-chair 2015-2017).
He gave more than 60 invited
talks, highlighting the fact that he was in the last ten years, Keynote Speaker (plenary talk) at
reputed and high-profile international conferences such as ICAART2012, LARS/SBR2012, ICINCO2013, WAF2014, ICSports2014, SYROCO
2015, CLAWAR 2017, WCQR2019,
ECIAR2021 among several others.
In the
last 11 years he has participated in more than 30 phD juries, and in 20 he was
the main arguer, in 17 advisor/co-advisor and in 3 he was a member. It is
noteworthy that 28 of the juries took
place outside his university. He also participated in more than 200 Master's juries.
He received more than 60 awards for school, pedagogical or scientific
merit. In the awards related to scientific research stand out the victories in the Robotic Soccer World
Championships (RoboCup) obtained
in 2000, 2002 and 2006 and at the European Robotic Soccer Championships in
2000, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 and several "Best
Paper awards"including reputed conferences such as ICEIS, IEEE
ICARSC and ICAART and several
awards in the area of inclusion and rehabilitation
and the recent 2nd place in the European
Robotics Challenges (1st place in the "Challenge2" of this competition).
With
regard to teaching, its pedagogical activity has been essentially focused on
the areas of Programming, Artificial
Intelligence and Intelligent Robotics. However, he has extensive teaching experience of more than 25
effective years of teaching, with the creation of content s and programs of more than 30 disciplines
and teaching of more than 40 different disciplines covering a significant
percentage of the areas of Informatics,
Computer Science and some related areas: Imperative Programming, Object
Oriented Programming, Functional Programming, Programming in Logic (and with
Restrictions), Basic Informatics, Information Systems, Databases, Software
Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Decision Support Systems, Image
Processing and Analysis, Games /Interaction, Intelligent Robotics, Planning and
Escalation, Intelligent Simulation, Computer Systems, Scientific Research
Methodologies and Project /Dissertation.
From his
teaching experience stands out the participation in the creation of a degree in
Communication Engineering (1996), a degree in Computer Engineering (2000), a
Master's degree in Interactive Systems (1998) and the reformulation of the
curricular plan of the degree in Management Informatics (1996) at the Fernando
Pessoa University. Also noteworthy is the participation in the reformulations
of the curriculum plan of the Degree in Computer Engineering and Computing
(2004), the Integrated Master in
Computer and Computer Engineering (2006/2008) at the Faculty of Engineering
of the University of Porto and the Integrated Master in Engineering and
Management of Information Systems
(2013/2014) at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho of which he
was the first director for more than two years and later also co-director. In
the last year it played a very important role in the reorganization of MIEIC
and its transformation into L. EIC and M. EIC is a decisive pepal in the creation
of LIACD - Degree in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and in general in
the collaboration FEUP / DEI - FCUP / DCC in the area of Informatics.
He has
high teaching experience in three different universities (UPorto, UMinho and
UFP) and experience of collaboration with dozens of other universities,
highlighting the creation of more than 30 programs of new disciplines with
emphasis on the creation of 6 new disciplines in doctoral plans(Intelligent
Robotics - PRODEI/ PDEHS, Advanced Methodologies of Modeling and Simulation -
PRODEI, Planning and Scheduling Methodologies - PRODEI, Multi-Agent Systems -
PRODEI, PROC – PRODEI, Intelligent Robotics - MAP-I, Advanced Artificial
Intelligence - MAP-I).
With regard to pedagogical projects he actively participated in several pedagogical projects: Courseware Sere
- The Human Being and Natural Resources, WebMAT - Manipulateable Materials,
VICERAVI - Rehabilitation Center, Serious Games for Rehabilitation. He
co-directed three completed PhD (Dep. Education UAveiro, Fac. Psychology and
Educational Sciences of UPorto, FEUP) related to pedagogical aspects and/or
with the area of education. It also carried out evaluations of European
projects in the field of serious games in teaching. Also noteworthy is his extensive
involvement in the organization and promotion of the National Robotics Festival (both as an organizer
and as president and vice-president of the Portuguese Society of Robotics) and
support for the participating secondary and basic schools. This festival has
more than 400 young people from primary and secondary education every year.
He is the author of more than 30
scientific publications of an essentially pedagogical nature in important
forums in the area of education such as: Lusophone Journal of Education, RISTI,
Revista Indagatio Didática, Revista Eureka Ensino, IEEE EDUCON, ENEC, EDULEARN,
Conf. Int ICT in Education, CISTI, m-ICTE, IOSTE, CIAIQ, WorldCIST, SMC, CSEDU,
among others.
Also is important to highlight the very
good pedagogical evaluations obtained in three differentuniversities with
pedagogical classifications always of very good quality and most of the times
better than colleagues who taught in the same disciplines, curricular years or
courses. In addition to pedagogical evaluations and the quality of publications
and pedagogical material available, the quality of the pedagogical activity can
be easily evaluated by the guidelines of end-of-course projects/works and
master's theses. In this topic, he
guided 68 projects/end-of-course work, 140 master's dissertations and 22 doctoral
theses completed, and about 70% of the works were at FEUP.
He is the author of international
patents registered in the United States and Japan, which have already been
published (granted). He also actively
participated in the construction of a large number of prototypes, systems and
software packages with emphasis on the Hearbo, FCPortugal and Intellwheels
prototypes.
He
organized/co-organized more than 60 conferences and scientific events with
emphasis on the National Robotics
Festival and its scientific conference/meeting (Porto, 2004), MASTA and IROBOT workshops 2005 – 2019, for the iberian conference
series of information systems and technologies - CISTI (2009 - 2017) and
conference series WorldCIST - World Conference on Information Systems
and Technologies (2015-2020). It is also noteworthy that it belonged to the Organizing Committee of the
European Robotic Soccer Championship - Dutch Open in 2006 and 2012 (Eindhoven),
RoboCup 2012 (Chair of the
Simulation League2D in Mexico)
and RoboCup 2014 (chairof
the Simulation League3D in Brazil) and have been chair/co-chair of IEEE ICARSC 2013, EPIA 2013 and ROBOT2013. It was also Program/Conference
Chair and main organizer of ROBOT 2015 – 2nd Iberian Conference on
Robotics (Lisbon)event that had
almost 200 participants. Due to its current size, the CIAIQ conferences he helped create and
organize (2014-2017) and which in the last two years it co-organized have had
more than 700 submissions of articles
and more than 400 participants. It is also noteworthy to have been Chair of
the organization in 2019 of the National
Robotics Festival (event with more than 700 participants), IEEE ICARSC 2019, EPIA2019, ROBOT2019, IEEE ICARSC 2020 and EPIA2021.
He was part of the public defense juries of more
than 40
doctoral theses, more than 200 master's dissertations and 75 other works (30
Monographs of UFP, 20 Projects - PSTFC of the Degree in Electrotechnical and
Computer Engineering and 25 Internships in Computer Engineering and Computing
at FEUP). He was also involved in concultancy in several companies and also for
the public administration in Portugal.
He evaluated Projects and proposals for the
European Commission in several international programmes including FP6, FP7 and
Horizon2020, evaluations for FCT (PhD and
Post-Doctorate Scholarships and Projects) and a wide range of evaluations for ANI – National Innovation
Agency (various calls and programs
from Portugal 2020), for SNSF (Swiss
FCT), UAEU - United Arab Emirates and MIUR
(Ministry of Science of Italy).
At the level of scientific management stands out to be currently, since May
2016, Director of LIACC - Laboratory of
Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science of the University of Porto (unit
FCT UI027). This FCT unit was evaluated
as "Excellent" by FCT in the last evaluation (2019) with maximum score (5.5.5) in
all components and includes more than 75
researchers (25 integrated PhD researchers). It is also noteworthy that he
belongs to the LIACC directive board for the last 13 years (since 2007). In this aboratory he also created and
directed the research group HMIC - Human-Machine Intelligent Cooperation Group
(group that combines the areas of Intelligent Systems and Interaction). He is
currently coordinator of the Scientific
Area of Intelligent Systems of the Department of Computer Engineering of FEUP.
At the level of academic management stands out to have been the first director of the Integrated Master's
Degree in Engineering and Management of Information Systems (MIEGSI) of the
University of Minho and responsible for its effective start-up replacing
the Degree in Technologies and Information Systems. It is noteworthy that this
course currently has more than 600 students enrolled and has evolved in the
period of direction / collaboration with the direction in the area of access
and promotion of the course whose average entry was 10.5 and that did not fill,
in the first phase, its 60 vacancies, for a course with minimum entry score
higher than 14.0 values and with a maximum of 140 placed in the first phase
(Daytime + Post-work), being currently the second largest course of UMinho in
terms of vacancies and with an excellent reputation. To this end, he
contributed decisively to the Management system that he designed and
implemented: SIAAUM - Access Analysis Information
System at the University of Minho. He also coordinated at FEUP/DEI and
later at EEUM/DSI the dissertation process, in a combined total of more than 10
years, having in the last year recoordinated this process at FEUP/DEI.
It is also noteworthy to have been
Chairman of the Board, Vice-President, President and President of the
General Assembly of the Portuguese Society of
Robotics, President of the General Assembly
of AISTI - Iberian Association of Information Systems and Technologies and
currently be President of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (2020-2023), vice-president (2016-2019)
with whom he had already collaborated in various initiatives and in its
management. He is also a senior member
of the reputed IEEE organization.
