Anonymous - Madeira

Madeira was extensively photographed, both by professional and amateur photographers (including stereographers). Views of the island were certainly available in the 1850's (Vicente Gomes da Silva was already active in the 1850's, with earlier references going into the late 1840's), but the earliest date in the views below is 1862 (handwritten). Various card mounts were used throughout the years. With the exception of the last case, the examples below concentrate on the main types that were used in the earlier views:

White flat card mount, early gold-framed round-corner images, with a vertical label in the backside (illustrated at left), and a handwritten date of March 29th, 1862. This series of views also uses an orange (light brown?) card mount.

Another white flat card mount with early gold-framed round-corner images. A (sort of) stamp present on some of these cards (illustrated at left) contains what might be an indication of the stereographer / publisher?

Yellow / light brown flat card mount with early round-corner images. Printed in a label present in the backside (illustrated at left): "Loo Rock and Pontinah, [sic] Madeira. - (Instantaneous.)"

A yellow flat card mount very common in views of the 1860's / 1870's. Several of these cards have a label in the backside (illustrated on the left) that seems to refer to the bookshop selling the views: "H. F. Dilley, - Stationer, Bookseller, etc. - Madeira.". The image recalls a famous photograph of João Francisco Camacho [Sena 1998, p. 86] although this view seems to show a different place , but there's no link that might associate this stereoview with him.

A 45 x 107 mm (1.8'' x 4.2'') glass view in the Verascope format that was introduced by Jules Richard [Perin 1993, 1997, 2001] in 1893 (quite popular in France during the early decades of the 20th century).
