Anonymous - Two boxes of 6 x 13 cm glass views of several locations

These two boxes (shown at right) are a good example to explain why this is a small world. After asking my friend Nuno Borges de Araújo to help me to identify some of the countryside places seen in the images, he came to the conclusion that they might represent a small village called S. Salvador de Briteiros, in the vicinity of Braga. I then thought about another friend of mine from many years, whose family had a farm house in that village. After looking at some of the images, he immediately came to the conclusion that not only his family house was represented in some of the views, but also that they had probably been taken by an early relative of him, who was affectionately  involved with photography in various of its forms (to the point of organising magic lantern projections in the walls of the village church on hot summer nights - now, doesn't that sound like a beautiful thing to do?).
The boxes contain a set of images that were most likely taken during the course of a vacation trip that included several locations in the north of Portugal, and seem to have been taken around 1909-1910. They are all 6 x 13 cm glass negatives and the contents of the two boxes were mixed during the years (some views showing the same event are distributed between the two boxes).
Some of the images show a football game played by F. C. Porto in their very first play-field at Rua da Rainha (now called Rua de Antero Quental), which was used between c. 1906 and 1912 [IP 1908, p. 592] [IP 1909-a, p. 56] [IP 1909-b, p. 825] [Dias 2001, p. 75]. Part of the play-field area is now crossed by a street called Damião de Góis, but it is interesting to notice that one of the early houses still stands (shown below).

All the images are in glass as described below:

6 x 13 cm (2.3'' x 5.1'') glass negatives (the positives listed were obtained digitally from the glass plates).

Detail of one of the images, showing a house that still stands nowadays (2003). The photograph on the right was taken from Rua Damião de Góis and the front of the white house faces Rua Antero de Quental.
