This document provides a comparative analysis between microcontroller and ASIC based designs, highlighting the main tradeoffs in presence and justifying why the current trend consists of using ASICs in a growing number of applications. A practical case study, related to the digital acquisition and storage of analog signals, is used to illustrate the tradeoff factors discussed.
