Broadly the research I carried out in the last few years has been concentrated on Distribution Networks, looking for technical and economic issues of interconnecting renewable energy and storage onto both islanded and low inertia systems and interconnected networks. Additionally, lately I am paying special attention to interconnecting power systems through HVDC technology and its impact on the current operation of the transmission system.
Specifically my research follows:
a. Smart grid and microgrids
b. Embedded and point-to-point HVDC grids
c. Renewable energy protection
d. Protection against network instability and low inertia
e. Design and application of communication and integrated system (e.g. IEC 61850)
f. Integration on reliability, availability and maintainability
g. Energy storage in islanded and interconnected systems
